The San Diego Beach Softball Club (SDBSC) is a non-profit organization formed in 1999. Its mission is to host quality beach softball tournaments and events in San Diego, California, the birthplace of the sport of Over-the-Line©. Over-the-Line© or OTL© (also synonymous with “beach softball”) was originated by the Old Mission Beach Athletic Club (OMBAC) in the early 1950’s. The game, itself, consists of 3-person softball teams competing on scaled down “courts” on various terrains--beach, grass, snow, river beds, etc. Hitting and catching are the premiere skills required, as there are no bases to run around. Women are allowed to use gloves, but Men’s competitions are glove-free, and must field bare-handed.
The sport has grown from friendly 3-man pickup games on the beach in the summer to weekly organized tournaments held 8 months out of the year, throughout the southwestern United States. The sport is capstoned by an annual World Championship event hosted annually by OMBAC on Fiesta Island in San Diego. This event draws participants from all over the world, and spectators, which number in the hundreds of thousands, over the two-weekend event.
